Number plate changes are made every March and September with dealerships often reducing older stock weeks before a change to make room for new vehicles. The latest change refresh has seen some dealerships axe up to 20 percent off the cost of a new model in a major steal for cash-strapped road users.
The popular Nissan Qashqai recorded the largest discount with buyers able to save over £5,000 on the price of the popular SUV.
Analysis of WhatCar?’s Target Price mystery shopper report found dealerships had cut costs by an average of 7.68 percent across their full range of stock.
This equated to a total saving of over £3,000 in August at a time when demand for models is rising as lockdown restrictions ease.
But the report found some dealerships were offering savings of over 20 percent on some models in a desperate bid to boost sales before the number plate change.
Nissan’s Qashqai saw a price reduction of 20.9percent in total savings of £5,471.
The Volkswagen Touran also saw prices fall by 20.5 percent with motorists able to save £5,676 off the total price.
Up to 19 percent can also be saved on the stylish Mercedes E-Class at many dealers with costs falling by over £7,500.
Major reductions were also found on the Suzuki ASx4S-Cross model which saw a 17.5 percent fall.

The BMW 3 Series Coupe, Nissan Micra and Seat Ibiza all saw reductions of over 16 percent due to the upcoming plate change.
Analysis from WhatCar? Revealed that the BMW 5 Series has seen the highest cost reduction with drivers able to save almost £8,000 on the new vehicle.
The analysis also revealed that diesel models had seen the highest discounts on the car market.
Diesel vehicles had seen an average discount of 8.46 percent which has seen prices fall by over £4,500.
Electric car savings had also risen with an extra 4,.73 percent off the cost of an EV machine.
This equated to a £2,208 cash saving when compared to data collected at the start of the year.
The £7,930 saving is 15.7 percent off the original price with models now available for just over £51,500.
Steve Huntingford, editor of WhatCar? said the discounts were aiming to “tempt” buyers back into dealerships.
He revealed that now was a “great time to be buying” some types of models due to the range of offers.
Mr Huntingford has also predicted that September had the potential to “eclipse all other months” as drivers desperately aim to secure new vehicles.
He said: “Normally September is the second-biggest month for new car registrations after March, but this year’s lockdown means it has the potential to eclipse all other months.
“With all sales now crucial to the industry’s efforts to recover from the effects of the Covid-19 there are some terrific discounts available to try and tempt car buyers back into showrooms.
“Our team of mystery shoppers is constantly scouring the market to set our Target Prices, and the evidence is that for certain types of car, this is a great time to be buying.”
