The Government has already announced a number of its plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050. This includes banning the sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030, hybrid vehicles from 2035 and diesel lorries from 2040.
As part of its aims, the Government will also be introducing a ZEV mandate at some point in the coming years.
With the release of its Net Zero Strategy, the Government outlined that a ZEV mandate will “guarantee greater number of zero emission vehicles on our roads, unlocking the transformation of our road transport”.
Alongside these changes, the Government has announced an additional £1billion grant to support electrification of UK vehicles and their supply chains.
In addition to this, £1.3billion has been given to accelerate the roll-out of charging infrastructure.
The report also stated that a further consultation will be published in early 2022 on the design of the ZEV mandate, CO2 emissions regulations as well as how and when targets will be set and enforced.
The announcement of a ZEV mandate provided a clear intention to consumers, businesses and the international community that the UK plans to translate ambition on electric vehicles into action.
In recent months, experts have debated whether car tax changes would be needed to address the gaps left by a future loss of revenue from fuel duty.
Some of the suggestions include a road pricing model, such as paying per mile or even geographic or toll-based charging.

Caterina Brandmayr, head of climate policy at Green Alliance, commented on the mandate and the potential impact it could have on the UK’s automotive industry.
She said: “An ambitious ZEV mandate will help turbocharge the switch to EVs in the UK, bringing down prices and growing the second hand market so that everyone can benefit from clean cars sooner.
“To maximise the benefits to consumers and business, the Government should ensure the mandate only rewards the sale of battery electric vehicles – rather than polluting hybrids – and sets ambitious sales targets.
“A well-designed ZEV mandate will bring investment to the UK, helping to futureproof jobs across the country and deliver the cuts in emissions needed for the Government to meet its climate targets.”
