New Mercedes-AMG E 53 spotted in saloon and estate form

The new Mercedes E-Class will soon receive the usual hot AMG variants

With the sixth-generation E-Class now unveiled, attention turns to the AMG models and we’ve already spotted the hybrid E 53 version testing. It will be joined by the range-topping E 63.

Spied during its Nurburgring development, the E 53 will be available in both saloon and estate bodystyles. We expect that the overall design will not stray from the standard E-Class too much, although in true AMG fashion, we can spot a few subtle details that hint at the extra performance.

Like the previous generation E 53 we expect the front end to get a bespoke grille and larger air intakes on the front bumpers. The two test cars are covered in camouflage so we can’t know for sure yet, but new AMG-specific wheels are present, as is the traditional quad-tip exhaust layout to the rear. Expect to see a new rear diffuser too.

The new E-Class features plenty of advanced technology but the biggest change is the inclusion of a new ‘Superscreen’ infotainment system – which is essentially a smaller version of the Hyperscreen set up. Mercedes typically likes to bring extra data and menus with its AMG cars so expect some new performance-focused features on the E 53.

Under the bonnet we could well see the same turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six as the S580e’s, combined with a battery to make around 503bhp and 750Nm of torque – a decent increase on the outgoing E 53’s 429bhp and 520Nm.

Mercedes is only offering the new E-Class in sporty AMG Line trim here in the UK due to market demand, so you would think the high performance E 53 could make up a good chunk of the sales. Although more patient buyers might make the jump past the E 53 to the incoming E 63 model instead.
