For the upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS 2018), Nissan Malaysia will be showcasing a range of technologies parked under the Nissan Intelligent Mobility umbrella. Based on the promotional material posted up, it looks like the latest Nissan Leaf and e-Power system will be making an appearance at the show.
The second-generation Leaf was first revealed in September last year, and represents a significant leap forward for the all-electric hatchback. Unlike the first-generation model, the new Leaf’s design is a lot less curvaceous and bulbous in appearance, which should attract more suitors than critics.
There’s also a larger 40 kWh lithium-ion battery pack (previous Leaf maxed out at 30 kWh) that powers an EM57 electric motor with 149 PS (110 kW) and 320 Nm – both figures surpass what the previous car can muster by up to 38%. The Leaf also comes with an e-Pedal that allows for one-pedal driving, similar to other EVs.
During our time at the Nissan Futures symposium in Singapore, it was already heralded that the Leaf will be making its way to Malaysia by Q4 2018 as part of a public preview, with pre-sales events set to follow after that.
As for the e-Power system, it is a range extender hybrid (REx) that is currently in use in the Note. We’ve already seen the Note e-Power on the our local streets earlier this year, and Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) has mentioned plans to introduce the REx system in Malaysia. Unlike conventional hybrids, the e-Power REx operates differently, so exposing the tech to the public at KLIMS is important for awareness.
On the Note e-Power, a 1.2 litre HR12DE three-cylinder engine functions only as a generator for a 1.5 kWh battery, which powers a 109 PS/254 Nm electric motor that is responsible for getting the vehicle moving. Nissan says that the system allows drivers to enjoy the benefits of an electric motor – such as maximum torque from standstill – without the range anxiety that comes with a typical EV.
Other technologies that will be on display include Nissan’s ProPILOT suite of safety and driver assist systems, connected systems and Vehicle to Home integration.
