Porsche Macan GTS essentials: Power wagon

What is it: The Porsche Macan is a small sport utility vehicle that stands out as a class benchmark for many. GTS models tend to rank mid-pack across trim levels in Porsches and the Macan is no exception. Five engine outputs delineate the Macan lineup: Macan S, GTS, Turbo, and Turbo with performance package (PP). For the 2019 model year, Porsche updated the Macan, including GTS models.

Highlights: The Macan's 360 peak hp from the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 falls in to the middle of the Macan line-up as well, splitting 252 hp, from the base model’s turbocharged 2.0-liter and 440 hp from the Turbo with Performance Package pretty close down the middle. Combined with 369 pound-feet of torque available between 1,650 – 4,000 rpm and a 7-speed PDK transmission gives the GTS plenty of scoot in just about every scenario.

Our Opinion: Black. The answer to most every design question about any Porsche GTS is black. Look no further than the recent review of the Porsche Panamera GTS. On the Macan GTS, the front and rear fascia, side skirts, headlights, spoiler, window trim, wheels, logos, and even the tailpipes are black. Okay, the brake calipers are red. Overall, the Macan looks cool in GTS form, if a smidge overwrought. To be fair, it’s still subtle compared to any Stelvio.

There’re more black accoutrements inside too, but they blend in, leaving the interior to look professional and allowing the fantastic fit and finish as well as comfort to be the standout impressions. Macan seats offer great support for swifter driving, but remain comfortable for the less-thrilling A to B driving. The large screen of the center console works well and displays all the information I’m seeking clearly and easily.

Power is another strong suit and works well with the all-wheel-drive system. The only transmission available is a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch unit. Our example included the optional Sport Chrono Package, which allows harder edged tuning from the adjustable bits of the engine, transmission, and chassis. All combined, 60 mph from rest is 4.8 seconds away and, if you’re in a hurry, will carry on to 159 mph. More importantly, the motor sounds good getting there. The standard-issue-on-the-GTS sport exhaust emits a nice growl, yet sounds refined. And you never feel any weird jerks, jolts, or jostles from the powertrain — everything operates smoothly.
