Ram Dominates Truck News in Detroit

When it comes to truck-related news, the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit lags behind the 2018 version, but Ram at least managed to bring some big news — literally and figuratively.

Following a complete redesign of its half-ton 1500 model for 2019, Ram took on its heavy-duty three-quarter-ton 2500 and 2500 Power Wagon and one-ton 3500. The new 2019 models get powertrain updates as well as refreshed exteriors and updated interiors.

Both trucks' exteriors hew closely to their half-ton sibling, more closely than offerings from Ford, Chevrolet or GMC. Interior upgrades also give both the option of high-quality luxury interiors and tech like the 1500's available 12-inch, vertically oriented touchscreen multimedia system.

Under the hood, the 2500 gets either a gas 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 rated at 410 horsepower and 429 pounds-feet of torque or a turbo-diesel 6.7-liter inline-six-cylinder Cummins rated at 370 hp and 850 pounds-feet. The gas engine is paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel gets a six-speed auto.

The 3500's standard engine and transmission are the same as the 2500, but its optional turbo-diesel inline-six-cylinder Cummins produces 400 hp and a class-leading 1,000 pounds-feet of torque from its 6.7 liters.

The 2500 Power Wagon, Ram's heavy-duty off-roader, gets many of the same upgrades as the 2500, as well as a reworked front bumper and a cleaner interior look thanks to relocated buttons and switches. The new eight-speed automatic also gives it a much lower 1st-gear ratio, giving the Power Wagon an improved crawl ratio.
