It’s indicative of state of the automotive landscape today that the electric crossover-cum-coupé has become the latest industry trend. We’ve already seen vehicles like the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron go on sale, and companies like Infiniti, Volkswagen, Nissan and even Mitsubishi are dipping their toes with their recent concepts. Now Skoda is joining in with its own low-slung, zero-emissions SUV concept, the Vision iV.
The Czech company released sketches of its new show car ahead of the Geneva Motor Show next month, and unlike its first electric concept, the Vision E, this latest one will be a lot more aggressive in design. Whereas the Vision E has a simple, clean front end with not a grille or air intake to speak of, the Vision iV sees the return of Skoda’s scalloped six-point grille and large inlets decorating the front end.
The fascia also sports what Skoda calls a crystalline structure, with a multi-faceted design that incorporates the slim headlights with triangular graphics. The lamps are joined together by a slim light strip – one styling cue shared with the Vision E – that the carmaker says will be a key feature of its electric vehicles.
Moving down the car, you’ll spot the characteristic sweeping roofline and prominent shoulders that emphasise the sizeable 22-inch aero wheels. Just like the e-tron, the Vision iV will come with side-view cameras that replace the usual door mirrors, while the rear features C-shaped tail lights and illuminated “Skoda” script. The sporty diffuser and another full-width light strip down low round off the design.
As with the Vision E, the Vision iV will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular all-electric platform, MEB, that also underpins the VW’s forthcoming I.D. Crozz. No technical details have been released, but expect it to come with an evolution of the Vision E’s powertrain, which includes an electric motor at the front and rear that make 300 hp and a lithium-ion battery that provides a range of up to 500 km.
