As a “WRX wagon” of sorts, the Subaru Levorg is an enthusiast’s favourite, and the next-generation model is set to be introduced soon. The car is returning to the place where it made its world premiere six years ago, the Tokyo Motor Show – and just like before, it will be shown in thinly-veiled Prototype form first.
The new Levorg will likely continue to be based on the current fifth-generation Impreza (which rides on the Subaru Global Platform) and use much of the same running gear, but the teaser image above shows that it will have completely different sheetmetal, inspired by the Viziv Tourer Concept. Instead of the scalloped side section on the Impreza and XV, the Levorg will feature a strong, upswept shoulder line.
Together with the prominent front and rear haunches, the side surfacing is reminiscent of the Lexus NX, and it’s complemented by an upwards kink along the beltline. The sloping rear hatch leads to a pair of broad C-shaped tail lights. Given the close ties between the current Levorg and the WRX, expect the next version of the latter to have much the same styling – minus the long roof and tailgate, of course.
Power is expected to come from a pair of downsized turbocharged flat-four engines – a 148 hp 1.5 litre and a 266 hp 1.8 litre. It will almost certainly continue to utilise a Lineartronic CVT and all-wheel drive.
