Why not just use the GMC Acadia? Its boxy styling matches the original Typhoon even better.
Specialty Vehicle Engineering currently builds the impressively revived Syclone pickup, and the company also holds the trademark to bring back the GMC Typhoon performance SUV if it ever wants to rekindle that name. Motor1.com showed its recent rendering of a Chevy Blazer-based Typhoon to the company, an SVE spokesperson shared his enthusiasm about the possible return of the speedy SUV. Furthermore, the rep remarked that if General Motors were to offer a GMC version of the Chevy Blazer, they’d “run with it.”
If SVE doesn’t want to wait for an edgy crossover from GMC, then the company could always use the Acadia as a starting point for a new Typhoon. The comparison above shows an original Typhoon and the refreshed 2020 Acadia.
The Acadia already shares the same platform with the new Chevy Blazer. The GMC is available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 230 horsepower (172 kilowatts) and 258 lb-ft of torque (350 Nm). While not as powerful straight from the factory, the turbocharged mill would probably be easier for SVE to tune than Acadia’s 3.6-liter V6 with 308 hp (230 kW) and 275 lb-ft (373 Nm).
A lowered suspension would help get the stance right. To match the original look, SVE could add some wheels with curved spokes, small fender flares, and the proper emblems.
This recipe isn’t too far from what SVE does to create its new Syclone. The firm starts with a GMC Canyon and supercharges the 3.6-liter V6 to make 455 hp (339 kW) instead of the stock 308 hp (230 kW). The exhaust is a cat-back, stainless steel unit with black tips exiting from each side of the rear. Six-piston front brakes with 13.6-inch slotted rotors replace the standard four-piston, 12.2-inch pieces. Black, five-spoke 20-inch wheels have a classic look. The Syclone emblem adorns the lower portion of the doors, a spoke on each wheel, and the tailgate.
