Terrafugia, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, has started order taking for its first flying car. Called the Transition, the two-seat aircraft/car will be delivered to customers from 2019, with the United States being one of the first markets to receive it, according to Automotive News China.
The Transition will sport foldable wings when on the ground, where a hybrid-electric powertrain will provide propulsion. Converting from driving to flying mode is said to take less than a minute, with a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine coming into operation.
No pricing was revealed but it was previously revealed the Transition would have base price of USD279,000. According to Terrafugia, the plane/car is able to fly at a cruising speed of around 160 km/h, with a ceiling of 10,000 feet, and a maximum range of about 640 km. On-road performance details weren’t given at the time but it’s claimed to be capable of driving at highway speeds too.
Terrafugia was founded in 2006 by a group of MIT graduates, and is understood to be the furthest along among its peers in its development of flying cars. The company is based in Woburn, Massachusetts, and was purchased by Geely in November last year.
It is rumoured that a new concept previewing the company’s second product will be revealed this month, which is capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), with a market introduction slated for 2025.
