Tesla Model 3 is fastest charging electric car – Half range in under 12 minutes

Tesla’s Model 3 is an incredibly impressive car for a number of reasons. It is there firm’s first mass-market electric car and its cheapest to date costs from £39,000 in the UK. In our first testing for the car, we were impressed by its power, handling, and interior. Now, the carmaker is giving you yet another reason to want to buy one of these cars it has rapid charging capabilities.

A recent software update has allowed the full potential of the car’s charging capability when stopped at V2 and V3 Superchargers.

According to the InsideEVs, the charge capacity at the V2 points has increased from 120kW to 150kW.

Wugz, a Long Range Model 3 owner, stated on Reddit that after the 2019.20.2.1 update the rate of charge and charging curve increased.

This is set to reduce charging times by up to 20 per cent who plugged into the V2 Supercharger. This equates to around seven and a half minutes shaved off charging.

The owner stated that the car immediately chargers at 125kW now and reached 143kW by nine per cent.

In his post, he followed on saying: “The peak rate is maintained until 45%, then shows a linear decrease to 118 kW at 50%, followed by a plateau until 59%, and after that the rate decreases linearly again.

“This “double hump” may be the new curve or may just be an anomaly with my (one and only) session.”

However, a Youtube video from Dagery reveals how much quicker the V3 Supercharger can be. The video shows the car topping up from two per cent up to 90 per cent in around 35-minutes.

In just six minutes the car recovered 92-miles of range and managed 50 per cent charger (153-miles) in just over 11 minutes.

The car again started at 126kW charging before rising to 250kW after one minute and maintain that until around the 5-minute mark before tapering off dropping to 150kW around the 10-minute mark and 108kW by the 14.5-minute mark.

Power plummeted to 56kW around the 24.5-minute mark and 36kW around the 34-minute mark.

In Europe, 50kW is seen as fast charging for a lot of EVs, so this is actually still not a bad rate of charge.
