Tesla Model 3 was the bestselling electric car in Europe in February this year.
This was the first month the electric car went on sale outside of the US and a whopping amount of sales were racked up.
A total of 3,6657 were sold last month, according to new data from Jato Dynamics.
This puts the Model 3 ahead of rivals such as the Nissan Leaf, BMW i3 and Kona EV. The next best-selling electric car, the Renault Zoe, sold 2,884 vehicles.
Felipe Munoz, JATO’s global analyst, commented that the growth in sales of Model 3 is impressive and unusual.
He said: “The performance of the Model 3 is remarkable, given we normally don’t see this kind of result until four or five months after a new car has hit the roads.”
Not only was the Model 3 the best selling electric a bit was also the best-selling mid-sized saloon beating vehicles such as the BMW 3 Series.
The Model 3 has been on sale in Europe for a number of months ahead of deliveries from America.
Notably, most of the volume sales were from private registrations, which breaks the usual trend of a new vehicle’s volume being made up of business/fleet registrations.
“As we’re seeing in the US, Tesla is also shaking up the European market.
“Its long-lasting impact will depend on how quickly the German premium makers, Volvo and JLR react to the arrival of the Model 3 to Europe and how quickly they can bring in their own midsize electric cars,” continued Munoz.
The best-selling car in Europe was the VW Golf with a whopping 31,769 registrations, followed by the Renault Clio (26,062) and Volkswagen Polo (22,610).
While battery electric cars market share is still jus a marginal 1.9 per cent, February saw a 92 per cent increase in the number of registrations.
Around 20,000 BEVs were sold across the continent over that period of time.
