Three women are in critical condition and one other suffering minor injuries after a Tesla Model Y SUV drove off a Los Angeles freeway, according to a report from Fox 11 via CarScoops. At around 2:25 am on July 26th, a white Tesla Model Y was going west-bound on the 10 freeway when the driver seemingly lost control, flying off the freeway, going down an embankment, and landing on a homeless encampment. There were four occupants in the Tesla when it crashed and two people sleeping in a tent where the vehicle landed. Only the occupants in the vehicle were injured.
Miraculously, the occupants of the tent were not seriously injured and left the scene on foot before first responders could arrive. A witness said he saw the Tesla “drive across all the lanes and literally fly off the freeway.” The woman who escaped the crash with only minor injuries said that the driver was “completely sober” but “her gears messed up.” We can only speculate how she came to that conclusion, but needless to say authorities will be investigating the incident to see if drugs or alcohol were involved.
Considering a Tesla vehicle was involved in this incident some may assume that the vehicle’s Autopilot or Full Self Driving hands-free driving features may have played a factor. Tesla faced criticism and is the subject of three DOJ probes over Autopilot safety concerns. In this particular instance there has been no mention of Tesla Autopilot being a factor in this crash. Though, the possibility is likely to be explored in the investigation.
