Tesla Roadster is set to launch in 2020 and is a fiercely anticipated vehicle. The Californian carmaker stunned the car world when it was revealed out of a shipping container at the Semi truck launch. At the time, fans were left speechless after the spec sheet for the car was shared by CEO Elon Musk. He stated that the car will be able to sprint from 0-60mph in just 1.9 seconds and have a top speed of over 250mph.
The car boss also stated that the vehicle will have 620-miles of range on a single charge and since the launch, he has stated on Twitter that the car will have more than this quoted figure.
At the time this seemed like an unreachable height but recent developments in the battery tech make it more plausible.
Just earlier this year the range of the Model S was increased to 370-miles on a charge and could rise to 400-miles before the end of the year.
The Roadster is set to have a battery pack double the capacity of the Model S too which makes this figure seem all the more achievable.
This weekend Musk was on the Ride the Lighting podcast where he discussed the company including the Roadster.
He said: “The new Roadster is kind of dessert. Do we really need a new roadster to accelerate our progress towards electrification and sustainability? No, not really.”
This indicated that the car isn’t necessarily a priority but it is still expected to launch next year.
Prospective volumes for the car were also shared and while Musk said he ‘didn’t know’ how many would be made each year he stated that it’s “probably not more than 10,000.”
The car is still expected to cost over $200,000 which will mean it is still a very exclusive vehicle, which is why 10,000 units a year seem high.
He did, whoever, double down on claims made at the Semi launch about how good the car will be and why petrol car rivals should be worried.
“It does have some value. If this can really outperform the best Ferrari or Lamborghini or McLaren on every dimension…on every level then that would finally erase any halo effect that exists for gasoline car.
“The new Roadster is designed to outdo, by a long shot, the best gasoline car.
He went on to say that the Roadster would be “crushingly good relative to the next best gasoline sports car.
Musk was tightlipped on the $50,000 more expensive Founders Edition vehicle but promised that some fun things were planned for these customers.
“We’re going to do some things to the new Roadster which are kind of unfair to other cars,” he quipped about the car’s performance.
While he didn’t confirm exactly what this would manifest into, he could be alluding the Space X package.
“If you have 3 Gs of thrust, you can go in any direction. You can go up and accelerate with still more than 2 Gs.”
The car is also quoted to have all-wheel-drive and four ‘usable’ seats.
What’s more, it is also quoted to be able to cover a 1/4 mile in just 8.8 seconds due to it’s quoted 10,000 Nm of torque.
