The 2022 Civic Si Will Only Be Available as a Sedan

We’re in the midst of a blizzard of 2022 Honda Civic news, what with today’s debut of the Civic Si, and it looks like the flurries will keep on coming until the verdict is rendered on the new Civic Type R—which we’ve really only been able to speculate about so far. But that’s for another time. For today’s slice of the Civic pie we finally have a bit more news on the sporty Si: The sedan body style making a comeback for the new 11th gen Civic’s Si variant will be the only body style the Si offers, Honda has confirmed.

The 10th-gen Civic’s Si model also came as a four-door sedan, as well as a two-door coupe. But, the two-door Civic is no more—meaning so is any Si iteration. As for the recently-unveiled Civic hatch, it will not sprout an Si variant; instead, that body style will continue to serve as the basis of the range-topping Civic Type R.

This news was not without its hints. Honda Canada recently announced on Twitter that “there will only be a Sedan (sic) version of the Si.” When asked if those plans are potentially for the U.S. market, too, the company said at the time “we cannot comment on the U.S. division’s plans for future product releases.” Also, every teaser and preview of the new Civic Si has depicted only four-door sedans.

Hi Malleweg, there will only be a Sedan version of the Si.

So, after all that speculation that maybe, just maybe, the Si badge might return to the Civic hatchback (where it started way back in 1986, following the ’85 Civic S), it wasn’t to be. Guess we’ll need to look to the Type R for spicy hatchback thrills.

This story was originally published June 25, 2021, with speculation that the Civic Si would only be offered as a sedan. It has since been updated to reflect Honda’s confirmation that that will be the case, and to clarify that there will be no Civic Si hatchback.
