Fuel economy is worked out by estimating how much it would cost to fill a tank and then divide that by each mile a car can travel. This differs to vehicles who can travel further on one tank of fuel as although these have good fuel-efficiency and can go longer distances, fuel tanks may be larger and more expensive to top-up.

Cheapest car per mile
ChooseMyCar research found two Toyota models topped the list for the best fuel economy with an average spend of just over 10p per mile.
The Japanese firm’s Aygo model was deemed the cheapest car to run with an average cost of 10.55 pence per litre.
The Toyota Yaris finished second place with an average spend per mile of 10.60p as Citroen’s C3 model recorded an average spend of 10.64p.
Peugeot’s 208 model was also revealed to be cheap to run, boasting an average fuel price of 10.90p per mile driven.
Other popular road cars to make the list include Volkswagen’s Golf and Polo designs, the Seat Leon and the Audi A3.
ChooseMyCar found the Land Rover Range Rover was the most expensive vehicle to run with an average spend of 23.02p per litre.
The vehicle has an average miles per gallon ratio of 25.2 meaning the car has only managed 5.54 miles per litre of fuel in the tank.
However, the Range Rover was considered one of the vehicle’s which could travel furthest on one tank of fuel with an estimated range of 582 miles.
Land Rover’s Discovery model was also expensive with an average spend per mile of 20.72 pence
Toyota’s C-HR saw an average cost of 16.21 pence per mile as the popular Ford Kuga and Kia Sportage saw average fuel prices exceed 15p per litre.

Longest on one tank of fuel
Some models may charge more per mile for their petrol costs but make up for it with longer ranges which allow motorists to travel for longer without needing to top-up their fuel tank.
The Peugeot 3008 was found to travel for over 617 miles on just one tank of fuel to top the list, closely followed by the BMW 5-Series.
Choose My Car also highlighted the Peugeot 208 and Skoda Octavia as long-range models with both able to run for over 579 miles on one tank.
Hyundai’s i10 achieved just 330 miles on one full tank of fuel but is partly down to the vehicle’s small 35-litre fuel tank.

Electric Cars
ChooseMyCar did not include electric cars in their findings even though the new vehicles can often achieve better efficiency than traditional petrol and diesel machines.
A recent study by carwow revealed electric cars could travel almost double the distance of diesel machines if five pounds were used to run each type of vehicle.
Electric cars could travel over 102 miles with just five kinds worth of electric power compared to just 56 miles on five pounds of diesel fuel.
Petrol was even further behind and could only manage 48.8 miles if five pounds of fuel was put in the tank.
However, one in five motorists believes electric cars are more expensive to run than traditional vehicles as 35 percent admitted their biggest worry about electric cars was getting stranded with nowhere to charge their vehicle.
Mat Watson, expert at carwow said: “Some people might be surprised to see that you can travel pretty much double the distance in an electric car than you can with diesel or petrol, but you can’t argue with the data.”
