This 7-Up Mustang Is One of the Most Bizarre Special Editions

Branded special editions usually make some sort of sense. Nautica branding classed up the Mercury Villager. Appealing to Town Car buyers with a Jack Nicklaus car made perfect sense. L.L. Bean and Subaru were a match made in heaven. And then there’s this: the 7-Up edition fox-body Mustang.

Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.

On the face of it, there’s not a lot of reason to the idea of selling a soda-branded Mustang. But dig deeper and it’s even weirder. According to CJ Pony Parts, the 7-Up Mustang was originally designed for a giveaway during the 1990 NCAA finals. Sponsor 7-Up would give away 30 cars during the game, painted green with a white convertible top.

The competition was canceled, but the design was already done. So rather than eat the cost, they decided to make a few thousand special-edition, 7-Up branded Mustangs. And now you can buy one of the 2477 automatic ones built.

The Deep Emerald Green paint is complemented by a white leather interior, while the turbine-style wheels are definitely Radwood approved. It’s a GT, too, which means you can be rollin’ in your 5.0 with the ragtop down so your hair can blow. The 73,000-mile car appears to be extremely well kept, with enough miles to show that it’s been regularly driven without wearing everything out too much.

An automatic fox body convertible might not be the ideal Mustang, but the 7-Up edition is certainly in contention for the weirdest pony car. So if you value oddness over driving experience, this is the Mustang to get.
