The 2019 GMC Canyon is one of the older designs in the current mid-size truck market, and it showed its age during our recent 2019 Mid-Size Truck Challenge, earning 358 out of a possible 600 points and coming in last place. But among our most read car reviews this week, the Canyon comes in first, relegating the popular 2020 Subaru Outback to No. 2 and fellow Mid-Size Truck Challenge entrant the 2019 Honda Ridgeline to No. 3.

In his critique of the Canyon, Cars.com reviewer Brian Wong had little praise for the GM product. Even in the areas where the Canyon performed well, like our drag strip performance testing where it came in second in acceleration testing and first in braking, it never felt like it was performing well.
“Despite having the shortest stopping distances, the brake pedal is way too stiff up top, and even if you feel like you’re pressing down fairly hard, there isn’t a corresponding amount of braking being applied,” according to Wong. “You end up pressing even harder, then suddenly the brakes grab and everything (and everyone) in the cabin does one of those forward lurching moves. Even after driving the truck for the better part of a week, I couldn’t get it down — with passengers on board, it would have resulted in constant apologies.”
The cabin didn’t fare much better in Wong’s review — or our judges’ scoring — due to uncomfortable seats and a mixed bag of features that include some luxury touches (ventilated seats) and some things one would expect to find in a truck costing far less the Canyon’s nearly $46,000 price (turn-key ignition, manually reclining seats). All of that, in a top-of-the-line Denali trim, makes for a disappointing performance.
Newcomers to the list of the week’s most popular videos are actually returning popular videos: our review of the redesigned 2019 Toyota RAV4 and our First Drive of the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator mid-size pickup. Old favorites like our 2019 Compact SUV Challenge, 2020 Hyundai Palisade review and the most recent time we took a Hellcat to the drag strip round out the list.
