Carmakers have been naming their models after places on Earth for some time now, with the Kia Rio, Hyundai Santa Fe, Chevrolet Malibu and Ferrari California being just a few examples. Now, there’s another addition to this list, and it comes from Toyota.
This is the new Toyota 86 Hakone Edition, which pays tribute to the famous Hakone Turnpike in Japan. Located two hours southwest of Tokyo, the famous stretch of road is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest driving roads, and a bucket list destination for enthusiasts.
The special edition model is based on the 86 GT grade sold in the United States, and is finished in Hakone green paint on exterior, with other features being bronze 17-inch wheels and a black-painted spoiler. If you’re getting a sense of deja vu at this point, it’s probably because you’re thinking about the 86 British Green Limited launched in Japan earlier in the year.
The similarities extend into the cabin, with seats made with a combination of dark tan/black Alcantara and leather. There’s also tan/black contrast stitching applied to various parts of the cabin, including the steering wheel, shift boot, parking brake, door trim and knee pad.
It’s the same story under the bonnet, as the 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine continues to deliver 205 hp and 211 Nm of torque with a six-speed manual transmission, or 200 hp and 205 Nm with the six-speed automatic. Where the US version is inferior to its JDM counterpart is the lack of Brembo brakes and a set of Sachs dampers.
Standard equipment on the 86 Hakone Edition include LED projector headlamps, chrome-tipped exhausts, multi-info instrument cluster display, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats, cruise control, as well as keyless entry and start.
