In the latest step to discourage Londoners from driving around the capital, the Mayor of London is expanding the Ultra Low Emissions Zone to cover most of the city from Monday 25, October. The most polluting vehicles will have to pay £12.50 to drive within the expanded zone, but what vehicles will have to pay? And which vehicles are ULEZ-compliant?
The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expands to cover most of London, stretching from the North Circular to the South Circular, today: October 25, 2021.
The ULEZ is a £12.50 charge handed to drivers of vehicles that don’t meet the new emissions standards.
At the moment, the ULEZ is in effect in central London, covering the same area as the congestion charge.
If you drive through the ULEZ and the congestion zone, you will have to pay both, meaning you could pay £27.50 in some areas of London.
After the expansion, the ULEZ zone will be a whopping 18 times larger, and affect hundreds of thousands more Londoners, as well as anyone driving into the city.
With the expansion of the ULEZ zone, all drivers who live within the affected areas will be charged £12.50 for making any trips in a non-compliant vehicle.
The ULEZ charges will be enforced for driving 24 hours a day, 364 days a year: the only exception will be Christmas Day.
Why has Transport for London introduced the ULEZ?
The ULEZ zone has been introduced in order to “clean up the city’s toxic air”.
A statement from the Mayor of London’s office says: “The central London ULEZ works.
“Before the pandemic it contributed to a 44 per cent reduction in harmful roadside nitrogen dioxide (NO2) within the zone.
“But pollution is not just a central London problem. Expanding the ULEZ will improve air quality for Londoners across the city.”
How can I check if my car is affected?
Transport for London has a free online checker where you can enter your licence plate number and check whether you’ll be charged for entering the ULEZ, and how much it will cost.

In general, ULEZ affects vehicles with pre-Euro 6 diesel engines and pre-Euro 4 petrol engines.
Non-Euro 3 petrol motorbikes are also affected.
ULEZ-compliant vehicles are newer petrol and diesel vehicles, as well as electric and hybrid vehicles.
How do you pay for ULEZ?
You can pay the ULEZ charge online, via the Transport for London website.
If you regularly drive around the expanded ULEZ zone, you can set up an Auto Pay account for £10 a year.
By setting up the account you avoid having to pay hefty fines for late ULEZ payments.
Drivers can be fined £160 for a late payment, reduced to £80 if paid within a fortnight.
