Vauxhall has unveiled the all-new Corsa-e, its first pure electric car. The rars has been one of Vauxhall’s best-selling cars, selling over 2.1 million units sold in Britain, since it was launched in 1993. A total of 13.5 million Corsa have been sold in Europe, emphasising its sustained popularity over the past few decades. Now, Vauxhall is launching the compact car into the future with an electrified powertrain and battery.
The car is powered by a 50kWh battery pack which allows for a WLTP range of 205-miles on a single charge.
While this is already impressive, the carmaker states that this can be extended by 40 per cent by using the Eco mode.
It is also equipped with rapid charging capability allowing it to recharge by 80 per cnet in just 20 minutes when hooked up to a fast charging station.
The electric motors produce 136hp and 260Nm of torque which allows it to sprint from 0-31mph in just 3.1 seconds and up to 62mph in 8.1 seconds.
There are three modes which the car can be used driven in – Normal, Eco and Sport – each which alter the power and range.
In Sport mode, the car delivers more performance and responsiveness but it does result in a loss of range by about 10 per cent.
Eco mode is the most efficient and can allegedly increase range by up to 40 per cent. This is by using a regenerative braking system to recover the energy produced under braking or deceleration.
Kinetic energy is converted into electric energy which is either used immediately or stored in the battery allowing the car to go further.
There are two levels of regeneration which ‘brakes’ the car at different velocities.
There is also numerous camera and radar-based assistance systems which enable the advanced driver assistance systems to be used.
Some of the driver assistance systems include Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Assist, Side Blind Spot Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control.
There are two emergency braking systems which use camera and radar to automatically reduce the speed of the car if a vehicle in front brakes.
Inside the car is a Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi with seven-inch colour touchscreen, to the top-of-the-range Multimedia Navi Pro with 10-inch colour touchscreen.
These systems are equipped with with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and voice recognition software.
Pricing has yet to be revealed and there is no set release date currently for the car but it is expected to go on sale early 2020.
