Porsche’s quirky Top 5 video series – not to be confused with our Top Five – has garnered plenty of attention of late, shining the spotlight on the brand’s iconic sports cars and illustrious motorsport history. The focus of the latest episode, however, is firmly on the present, as Zuffenhausen takes a look at the design cues of the new 992 Porsche 911.
The host, Porsche’s director of exterior design Peter Varga, points out his favourite parts of the eighth-generation model, starting with the vertical third brake light – aptly inspired by the pause symbol and integrated with the rear grille slats. The rear end, with its full-width tail light strip and the broad black graphic that ties together the rear number plate, tailpipes and intercooler vents, is also mentioned here.
Coming in at number three is the voluptuous side surfacing, now playing host to the redesigned door mirrors and electric door handles that sit flush when not in use – like a Tesla. Varga then walks us through the typical 911 “gun barrel” headlight bulge, which has been emphasised on the 992 and now flows into the doors.
However, it is the trademark rear-engined proportions, enhanced by the new car’s wider body and larger rear wheels for a meatier stance, that is his number one design cue. It’s a brief but enlightening video, and a perfect accompaniment to your morning coffee. Do you agree with Varga? Let us know in the comments section after the jump.
The rest of the new 992 is full of highlights as well, including a revised 3.0 litre turbocharged flat-six with 450 hp and 530 Nm of torque on tap, a new eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, a Porsche-first Wet mode, new active safety systems and a revamped interior with the latest infotainment systems.
