It has been a great year for Volvo Cars, which set a new global sales record in 2018, while breaking the 600,000 units milestone for the first time since the company was founded in 1927. Sales rose 12.4% to 642,253 units in 2018, up from 571,577 cars in 2017. Last year was the fifth consecutive year of record sales for the carmaker.
Volvo reported strong demand for its renewed product portfolio, led by the XC SUV range, across the core regions of the US, China and Europe. In December, it sold 60,157 cars, up 2.8% year-on-year.
Last year, US sales grew by 20.6% to 98,263 cars, led by growing demand for the XC60 and its SUV sisters. The US-made S60 sedan has started reaching dealerships and should contribute to volumes in 2019.
It was bigger volume but less growth in China, which is up 14.1% to 130,593 cars in 2018. Demand was spearheaded by the locally assembled XC60 and S90 models. In Volvo’s home market of Europe, sales rose by 6.4% to 317,838 cars, led by the new V60 wagon and XC40 compact SUV.
The XC60 was the company’s top-selling model in 2018 with 189,459 units (184,966 units in 2017), followed by the XC90 with 94,182 cars (87,518 in 2017). The V40/V40 Cross Country was third with 77,587 units (2017: 95,370 units), slightly edging out the XC40 at 75,828 units. The Geely-owned Swedish company sold 57,142 units of its flagship S90 sedan (46,602 in 2017).
