Volvo shows features of 'driver support system' for car safety

Volvo will roll out its first-ever over the air software update on its new XC40 Recharge fully electric car model which will give the car extra features. The new update will provide a new base software for the car’s main electronic systems.
Volvo has confirmed charging speed will also be increased as well as an improved driving range.
Updates will also be made to the Android Automotive operating system which operates the car’s ‘infotainment’ system.
Volvo has also confirmed a range of improvements will also be made to the car’s Bluetooth connectivity, climate timers and the models 360-degree camera.
The update will be available automatically with owners simply needing to accept the download on their cars.
Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo Cars said the new over the air updates “couldn’t be easier”.
He said: “Yesterday, you still had to drive to the workshop to get the latest updates to your car.
“Today, you simply click OK and your electric Volvo takes care of the rest. It couldn’t be easier.”
Volvo has confirmed the introduction of their new over the air updates means customers no longer need to visit workshops for a range of new updates.

They said it means a new Volvo is no longer at its finest when it leaves a forecourt.
Instead, the car will keep improving over time as additional updates are incorporated into cars.
Over the air updates have been used by a range of manufacturers in recent years such as electric car firm Tesla.
More firms are now embracing the technology but some are taking a more cautious approach.
Jaguar’s I-Pace electric SUV can run its previous software if a new update fails with owners even able to reject updates.
Some over the air updates can take up to an hour to complete which in some cases can immobilise the vehicle temporarily.
However, from a safety perspective over the air updates can prove important as it means all drivers have easy access to simple fixes.
On average, it is believed only around 62 percent of owners respond to recalls and repairs for their vehicle despite several warnings.
The XC40 was always designed to receive over the air updates from the early part of 2021.
They say once available, drivers will be able to enjoy a vehicle that gets better all the time and stays up to date.
The XC40 Recharge is capable of up to 259 miles on a single charge according to WLTP estimates.
Volvo also claims drivers can also fast charge their vehicle from zero to 80 percent in around just 40 minutes.
