Already offering a broad range of plug-in hybrid vehicles, Volvo is further committing to electrifying its lineup with the new 2021 XC40 Recharge, an all-electric small SUV with a whopping 402 horsepower and 486 pounds-feet of torque. Volvo just announced its electric SUV will cost $55,000 before options, which is relatively pricey before you consider tax credits; a gas-powered XC40 T5 Inscription trim, the top-spec version, starts at $42,445 (including destination).

The XC40 Recharge’s starting price will be $54,985 (including a $995 destination fee), but it’s currently eligible for the full, non-refundable federal electric vehicle tax credit of $7,500, and there may also be state and local incentives that further discount the cost.
That is just the starting price, however, and option packages, premium paint, larger wheels and additional stand-alone options can take the price well above $60,000. Among the option packages are a Climate Package ($750) that adds a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and heated windshield wiper blades, and an Advanced Package ($1,300) that includes Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driver assistance system, a 360-degree surround view camera, wireless device charging and more.
Stand-alone options include upgrading from 19- to 20-inch wheels ($800), metallic exterior paint ($645) and a premium Harman Kardon 14-speaker sound system ($800). A heat pump ($350) is also available; Volvo says it will help extend the XC40 Recharge’s range and can precondition the cabin.
Standard features on all XC40 Recharges include a new, Android-based infotainment system with a 9-inch display. In a Volvo-first, the XC40 Recharge will have the ability to receive over-the-air updates to its software and operating system, helping to keep the XC40 Recharge up to date with subsequent iterations.
Also standard are a number of safety features like blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and collision avoidance, reverse automatic emergency braking and curve-adaptive LED headlights.
To address charging concerns and range anxiety, Volvo has teamed with ChargePoint to give customers access to the ChargePoint charging network. According to Volvo, with ChargePoint’s agreements with companies like EVgo and others, XC40 Recharge customers will have access to “more than 80%” of the current public charging stations in the U.S. and Canada.
The 2021 XC40 Recharge will arrive at dealerships later this year.
