It’s the end of the road once more for the iconic Volkswagen Beetle, after the Wolfsburg-based automaker made the call to cease production of the model at the end of the year. While the world continues to speculate on the possible successors, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has decided to celebrate the occasion by introducing the Collector’s Edition Beetle.
Priced at RM164,390, the collectible model is available in four colours, namely Blue Silk, Pure White, Hanabero Orange, and Tornado Red. Just 75 units of the cute car will be made, and all owners of the Bug will receive an official Collector’s Edition certificate of ownership. Included in the price is the customary five-years unlimited mileage warranty, five-years roadside assistance, and three-years free maintenance.
What’s special, you ask? Well, each car comes with accessories worth up to RM12,000, of which includes a rear spoiler, decorative films, chrome exhaust tips, aluminium sports pedals, scuff plates, Volkswagen window tint, as well as an emblem marking its production run. If that doesn’t do it for you, just remember that this will be the last special edition model to be launched in Malaysia.
Of course, there are no mechanical changes done to the Collector’s Edition Beetle, so the ubiquitous 1.2 litre TSI petrol engine continues propulsion duties here. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes 103 hp at 5,000 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 1,550 rpm – drive is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch (dry clutch) transmission.
VPCM managing director Erik Winter said: “All good things must come to an end, and it is the same with this global bestseller. The Beetle has enjoyed a rich history – in Malaysia it is one that dates to when it was assembled in Shah Alam in 1968. In fact, most Malaysians grew up with a connection to the much-loved car.”
The launch of the Collector’s Edition Beetle is part of VPCM’s “Bye Bye Beetle” campaign, which culminates with The Iconic Gathering happening in Putrajaya on July 13, 2019. The company aims to break the current Malaysian record of the largest Beetle gathered at one location. So for those who own a Beetle of any generation, feel free to join in the fun.
