Volkswagen could be launching an all-electric rugged SUV, as part of the vehicle’s burgeoning I.D. model range.
VW has been unveiling new electric cars as part of the I.D. range over the past few years as it looks to move towards electrification.
The carmaker wants to be a global leader in the electric car market and has planned a comprehensive range of vehicles to try and achieve that.
At the Shanghai Motor Show the carmaker unveiled the I.D Roomzz which is a Touareg inspired electric car that will sit about the I.D. Crozz.
The car can be specified with up to three rows of seats and seven seats in total.
However, the range could also be getting another new model which would be a rugged off-roader that could take on the Land Rover Defender.
VW bosses have revealed that they are mulling over a potential rugged off-road I.D. car in future.
VW’s head of design Klaus Bischoff told AutoExpress that: “Maybe one of the next ID. family members is a more rugged [SUV], let’s see.”
This follows the introduction of the electric pick-up from start-up Rivian and the forthcoming Tesla Pickup Truck.
Volkswagen still believes there is a gap in the market for a truly tough off-roader.
Volkswagen’s head of strategy Michael Jost said to AutoExpress: “There are no producers in this sector yet, [building] a robust electric car that loves scratches and wears them as a badge of honour.”
The car would be hard-wearing and designed to be pushed to the limits.
It would be simple and use cheap and robust plastics, scratchproof and waterproof displays and an interior that could be cleaned with a pressure washer.
If it goes into production it would likely use the MEB platform like many other vehicles made by the Volkswagen Group.
