When you want to show the world that a sports car is capable of more than conquering a canyon road, doing burnouts, and zero-to-60 runs, perhaps you want to try flying off a prepped ramp and into a pile of boxes.
Toyota collaborated with Formula D champions Papadakis Racing for an action-packed commercial titled “The Pitch,” which takes place in Los Angeles. As part of the ad campaign, the automaker recruited stuntman Andy Bell to jump a 2021 Toyota GR Supra 100 feet in the air for the final scene.
They filmed the epic stunt on a peninsula in the sleepy town of San Pedro near the Port of Los Angeles. The production team built a landing pad made of large cardboard boxes and covered the wooden ramp with powder to help the car launch better. In the scene, the Toyota GR Supra clears a 100-foot jump before crashing into the cardboard boxes.
Modification upgrades included a very beefy roll cage, roll bar padding, a custom driver seat, and a six-point harness. To prevent the front-engine GR Supra from going nose-down after the jump, Toyota added extra weight to the rear. Other than the above mods, the car was mostly stock.
Although the Supra does not land on top of the boxes as planned, instead smashing through and hitting the ground hard, the driver walks away unscathed. After the violent landing, a forklift scoops up the poor Supra, which suffers a broken rear suspension, a couple of flat tires, among other damage.
