Even after the era of the wretched Subaru 360 came to an end in 1971, Subarus spent much of the 1970s being sneered at by Americans as novelty cars. By the end of the decade, though, Subaru sales were strong on these shores, and options beyond four-wheel-drive started showing up. One such feature was the Hill Holder for manual-transmission Subarus, introduced in the 1980 model year. Here’s a 1981 magazine advertisement for the Hill Holder option.
When I lived in San Francisco, I learned to stop well back of any car that looked like it might have had a manual transmission, when on a steep hill. Of course, Americans have solved the roll-back problem, these days, by abandoning the manual transmission.
