From the brink of bankruptcy and a government bailout in 1979, Chrysler bounced back during the 1980s with the K platform and its many spinoffs, all under the leadership of Lee Iacocca. In 1989, Chrysler was feeling ever-increasing pressure from Japanese, European, and South Korean imports, and so Iacocca seized upon the excitement of the 200th anniversary of the United States Bill of Rights to issue Chrysler's Car Buyer's Bill of Rights, promising to beat back the import invasion with better cars and better dealerships. This ad probably didn't convince many BMW shoppers to purchase the Chrysler TC By Maserati instead of a 5-Series, and it hasn't changed my mind about the Plymouth Reliant that was the worst station wagon I've ever experienced, but it's still a bold Iacoccan statement.
