We like to write about barn find discoveries all the time here at Road & Track, but this is a bit different. It’s a rare prototype Hot Wheels car from the Sixties recently discovered by a toy collector who says it’s worth upwards of $100,000.
The toy car, discovered by collector Joel Magee, is a Hot Wheels Chevy Camaro built by Mattel in 1968. It was found amongst a larger collection of Hot Wheels and confirmed to be legit after a Hot Wheels expert conducted an up-close examination. What makes it so special? That white paint. From the release:
“I’ve collected toys forever and this Hot Wheels Camaro is the Holy Grail of collectibles,” Magee said in a statement. “I am beyond excited to have found it to add to my vast collection. This car is so extremely rare that there is only one known example which is this one. Imagine something that originally sold for 59 cents now being worth upwards of $100,000!”
Magee has no plans to sell the toy car, instead taking with him to tour throughout the country, to display at upcoming toy fairs, media appearances, and appraisal events.
