More power can decrease the charging time, but not by that much – 5-16% and up to 3-4 minutes.
The most recent update of V2 Superchargers to 150 kW output and a new On-Route Warmup feature increases the pace of fast charging, but by how much exactly?
According to the test performed by Alex Venz on the Tesla Model 3 Performance, the difference from increasing peak output from 120 kW to 150 kW (+25%) is rather small, especially when charging to a high SOC.
The test consists of three scenarios of charging from about 10% SOC to 90% SOC, at similar temperatures and at the same charger:
Base: v2019.5.15
After update: v2019.12.1.1 without On-Route Warmup
After update and warmup: v2019.12.1.1 with On-Route Warmup
As you can see, the difference is from around 5% to over 16% in time. Replenishing 240 miles of range can save you some 160 seconds at 150 kW (close to 220 seconds if you end earlier and used On-Route Warmup feature). The peak charging power was about 142 kW, but that didn’t last long.
It’s expected that the On-Route Warmup would bring a significant difference when the battery is really cold, preventing prolonged recharging. Using the feature just like in the video, the difference between the two scenarios (with and without On-Route Warmup) is worth maybe a minute:
