Fisker Ocean electric SUV promises a very inexpensive monthly lease

The Fisker Ocean will be revealed in January 2020.

The midsize electric crossover and SUV segment is suddenly starting to get crowded, at least when it comes to concepts previewing production models due in the next two or three years. Not wanting to get lost in the shuffle, Fisker (remember Fisker?) has produced a steady drip of teaser images of its upcoming Ocean SUV, due on the market in 2022.

This week, the boutique electric automaker has shared the Ocean in side view, as well as the crossover’s lease pricing. Fisker plans to lease the Ocean for $379 a month after a $2,999 down payment once the model enters production. That’s not a lot of money any way you look at it, but the company hasn’t named a purchase price just yet—that’s coming later. But Fisker opened order books for the SUV today, asking lessees for a $250 reservation fee.

“People around the globe will be able to obtain the Fisker Ocean starting at $379 (U.S.) per month via our mobile app in 2022,” Henrik Fisker said. “We created five easy-to-choose option packages for Fisker Ocean that will be available to our reservation holders closer to the end of 2020. This removes the complexity of complicated option configurators and allows Fisker to offer more unique experiences for less money. Customers will be able to see the vehicles and option packages when we begin rolling out our experience centers in shopping districts and airports, as well as book test drives through our app closer to the start of production.”

The Ocean promises a range of 250 to 300 miles.

The company also plans to be flexible when it comes to lease duration, with terms ranging from just one month to several years, offering 30,000 miles a year. Yes, that means you could lease the Ocean for just one month, like a very long rental—California is very laid-back this way. (But that could be pricey with that down payment). Fisker is also bundling insurance via an app, promising lower quotes based on the Ocean’s projected low service and maintenance costs. Speaking of service, Fisker plans onsite pickup and drop-off of vehicles for maintenance, requested via an app.

We’ve yet to see the EV in the metal, but the Ocean promises a range from 250 to 300 miles on a full charge courtesy of an 80-kWh lithium-ion battery, available all-wheel drive and a luxurious interior.

The Ocean will be revealed in production form on Jan. 4, 2020—this won’t be a pie-in-the-sky concept—and Fisker is also expected to announce purchase pricing then. Production is expected to start in late 2021, with the first deliveries scheduled for early 2022. The electric SUV will have no shortage of competitors once it gets here, but it seems to be targeting the middle of the market when it comes to pricing and the level of luxury features.

The Ocean will also be sold to buyers, but Fisker hasn’t shared the expected price of the SUV, due on the market in 2022.
