Electrified car sales in Europe exceeded 100,000 In March.
According to latest stats from JATO Dynamics, the European market of electrified cars (hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric) reached a new all-time record in March 2019, for the first time exceeding 100,000 in a single month.
Very encouraging is that plug-ins are now very close to conventional hybrids in sales:
The total market share of HEV/PHEV/BEV is 7.1%.
“While overall demand may be on the decline, the good news is that the electrification shift continues at pace, with a significant result in March. It was the first time that registrations of electrified cars (BEV, PHEV, HEV) exceeded the 100,000 units mark, with a total of 125,400. Demand was up by 31% – mostly driven by German, Norwegian, Spanish and Dutch registrations. Electric and plug-in hybrids counted for almost half of that total, but the real driver of growth was the BEV, whose registrations increased by 85%.”
The major source of growth in Europe was the Tesla Model 3 (15,755 registrations according to JATO Dynamics), which was one of the best-selling cars in March (not far from breaking into the top 25) and the “top-selling premium midsize car”. Tesla was the #25 best-selling brand for the first time.
“The rapid volume growth of pure electric cars was mainly due to the outstanding results of Tesla. Thanks to strong demand for the Model 3 the brand entered the top 25 best-selling brands in Europe. Registrations of the Model 3 jumped from 3,747 units in February (revised) to 15,755 units in March – meaning it was Europe’s top selling electric car.
The Tesla Model 3 was also the top-selling premium midsize car in March. While it was able to outsell its rivals in the sedan category in February, the smallest Tesla was able to outsell all of its rivals in March, including all body-types.”
