Performance electric cars are pretty much expected to win every drag race against internal combustion cars in their size and weight category, thanks to instant torque delivery. The ones designed for quick launches, at least — the Nissan Leaf probably isn’t going to smoke most other modern ICE hatchbacks these days, even with its very respectable 6.5-second 0-60 mph launch time.
But what about a Tesla Model 3 going up against the very best performance sedans from Team Germany and Team Italy?
“Top Gear” U.K. decided to find out for themselves, prodded by some boasting by Elon Musk regarding the Model 3’s on-track prowess. Leaving the issue of cornering ability and some other metrics aside for the moment, which car would win a drag race between a Tesla Model 3, a Mercedes-AMG C63 S, a BMW M3 and an Alfa Romeo Giulia QV?
As Chris Harris points out early on, the question may well be answered relatively far down the track, because despite a quick launch off the line electric cars do tend to run out of juice north of 100 mph. That’s where the Germans have a shot at beating it.
Will the Model 3 hang on to its reputation as one of the quickest launchers that’s not an actual SpaceX rocket?
Place your bets and find out.
