Whether it’s called the Mach E or something else entirely, we’ll get our first look at Ford’s Mustang-inspired EV SUV mid-November.
Ford, like many other automakers, has for a few years now made it clear that electric vehicles are a big part of its product strategy going forward. Only trouble is, we’ve yet to actually see very many of these hypothetical EVs, let alone drive or buy them.
That’s starting to change, and today, Ford confirmed that it will reveal its Mustang-inspired SUV—Ford’s words, not ours—EV to the world on Nov. 17. We’re sure Mustang purists will have strong thoughts about the format changes (in terms of both electrification and crossover-fication), but for what it’s worth you can see a few pony car touch points, especially around the headlights and in the taillights, in the teaser image up top.
This is not Ford’s first EV (the Ranger EV and the Focus Electric preceded it), but it is the first offering from the company apparently designed from the ground up with an electric powertrain in mind. Presumably, whatever platform it rides on will be used on a variety of vehicles.
So if a higher-riding crossover-thing isn’t for you, perhaps a true low-to-the-ground sports car will join it in the lineup (a la the Porsche Taycan and the lifted, wagony Cross Turismo). Future Lincoln variants wouldn’t surprise us, either.
Also, we’re interested in learning how much, if any, of the technology onboard this vehicle draws on Ford’s investment in Rivian. We’ll learn a lot more on Nov. 17.
