The limited edition John Cooper Works GP hatchbacks have always been a riot to drive, and now, there’s a new generation of Minis out there, and they deserve the GP treatment. The 2020 John Cooper Works GP will be that car, and we really hope it will draw plenty of its inspiration from 2017’s GP Design Concept. Otherwise, with the standard John Cooper Works already available, what would be the point of paying extra for the GP?
The new model builds on the legacy of the 2006 and 2013 GP Coopers. Six years ago, the GP had an angry turbo engine, a lighter body, and adjustable shocks mounted upside down, to name just a few of the extensive modifications.
Unfortunately for Mini, ever since they released their design study last year, we’ve been asking ourselves: Would it be unreasonable to expect them to produce the GP with that integrated roll cage, roof scoop, those massive flared fenders, and the rear wing that could put a WRC car to shame? It shouldn’t be. It really shouldn’t.
