We could all use a bit of good news, right? Cadillac has some for us—hotter versions of the CT4-V and CT5-V are on their way, and each will be offered with a manual transmission, the company announced in a release. Plus, Cadillac has seemingly confirmed that the CT5-V will get V-8 power.
These two sport sedans will wear the “Blackwing” name, which was first used for the 4.2-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine in the CT6-V. Sadly, that engine is out of production, and it’s highly unlikely to make a comeback. But in a teaser video released by Cadillac, we definitely hear a V-8 engine note. Previous rumors have suggested that the CT5-V Blackwing will be powered by GM’s 6.2-liter supercharged LT4 V-8, previously used in the CTS-V and currently used in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. But a naturally aspirated Small Block also seems like a reasonable possibility, especially when you consider that the CT5-V will be positioned against the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63.
Either way, we’re excited for a mid-size sport sedan with a V-8 and a stick. It makes this Cadillac the only car of its type.
Older spy videos of the CT4-V Blackwing seem to point towards this car getting a V-6 of some sort, based on the sound. The old ATS-V used a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 making, but Cadillac also has a newer 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 in its parts bin. The CT4-V Blackwing will go up against the Audi RS3, BMW M2, and Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, so figure somewhere in the ballpark of around 400 horsepower.
Cadillac was light on details in its announcement, but it did say that both the CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwing were “seconds” faster around Virginia International Raceway than their predecessors. The ATS-V and CTS-V were damn fast, so these two should be serious.
I really enjoyed my time with the CT5-V, and the thought of that car with a V-8 is particularly appealing. Like I said earlier, something to look forward to.
