Automakers often put cool Easter egg-type things in their performance vehicles. Some are for performance, like the Chevy Camaro Z/28’s flying car mode, or there’s Jeep’s insistence on putting as many grille and headlight outlines as possible on the Wrangler. But sometimes they’re extra cool.
The C8 Corvette, like almost all vehicles, requires a gentle break-in period for the first 500 or so miles. Usually the manual says something like “keep the revs under 4,000 rpm, no hard stops or starts, no constant speeds, no racing the engine, etc.” The Corvette is no different here, except for the fact that its new digital tach changes the indicated redline once you’ve crossed that 500-mile threshold. Owner Jeremy Wellborn came through with the video.
Some Lexuses do a similar thing as they’re warming up, showing a redline of 5,000, then 6,000 and then 7,000 as the fluids get up to operating temperature. This is a slightly cooler version of that. We still wonder how many owners complete the break-in period honestly, and/or how many read the owners manual. It would be understandable if you got the keys, gripped it and ripped it. But try and hold on: The longer you wait to go full bore, all the sweeter it will be when you finally do.
