According to a media report, 2-wheeler sales in India crossed the 2 crore mark for the first time in 2018. The segment saw a growth of 13% compared to the previous year.
Motorcycle sales registered a higher growth compared to scooter for the first time in more than a decade. Motorcycle sales grew by 15% to 1.37 crore units, whereas scooter sales grew by 9% to 69.5 lakh units. As a result, the share of motorcycles in the overall 2-wheeler sales increased to 63.8%, while that of scooters dropped from 33.4% in 2017 to 32% in 2018.
Higher motorcycle sales can be attributed to increased demand in rural markets. Higher fuel prices and insurance costs are likely to be the reason why scooter sales have dropped.
