The 2020 Hyundai Sonata broke cover yesterday, showing off a new fastback bodystyle bumping it even further ahead of the rest of the midsize pack, at least in looks. It took cues from the Le Fil Rouge concept that debuted at Geneva last year. The new Sonata will be lower and wider — always good things — and its wheelbase and length grow a bit too.
The front end features Hyundai’s new "digital pulse" cascading grille and new daytime running lights "embedded with hidden lighting lamps" that go chrome when turned off. The new lighting was revealed last year on the company’s HDC-2 concept and points to the future of Hyundai’s lighting. The lights sort of connect to the window frames across the hood and side of the car.
Inside, the Sonata looks way more upscale, even though the last one was pretty good looking as well. The company says it was inspired by stealth aircraft. It gets satin chrome accents as well. Designers compressed the height of the dashboard, according to Hyundai, which aids the lightweight feeling. The central and gauge cluster screen are a bit smaller than the current displays and have capacitive touch buttons.
That’s all we really know for now. For powertrains, we’d expect a four-cylinder and a hybrid. And prices should start close to the current model. Think low $20K range for the base model and mid-$30K for top trims.
