Mercedes-Benz’s new GLA, the entry point to the company’s SUV lineup, is 3.9 inches taller, an inch wider and a half-inch shorter than the model it replaces. The 2021 GLA has new headlamps and a new grille, while the slightly bigger interior gets a thorough refresh.
The updated interior looks much better than the outgoing model, at least in pictures. Mercedes’ new MBUX infotainment system is now standard (it used to be an option), using a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 7.0-inch touchscreen. The AMG GLA35 comes standard with 10.5-inch screens and they’re optional on the GLA250. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

GLAs use a 2.0-liter turbo-four and eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The engine produces 221 hp in the GLA250 while the AMG model’s engine produces 302 hp, good enough to hit 60 mph in 5.0 seconds, Benz says. The GLA250 is front-wheel drive with 4Matic optional. 4Matic includes an off-road driving mode with hill-start assist. Standard across the board are the usual Mercedes safety goodies such as lane-keeping assist and active blind-spot and brake assist distance.
The GLA250 goes on sale next summer with the AMG hot rod in showrooms at the end of next year. Prices are coming closer to launch.
