When is the right time to “hang it up?” Tree climbing probably comes first at about 15 years old. Pickup basketball comes next, maybe at 25. I certainly wouldn’t want to see any 45 year olds on the football field, unless they were holding a clipboard. But racing a high-performance car? As long as you can see, and react, you can do that well past middle age.
Take Rupert Schwaiger, for instance. At over 70 years old, he’s still ripping his monstrous 800-hp 993 Porsche 911 GT2 up a hill at breakneck pace. The video above is from 2018 at the Cividale-Castelmonte Hill Climb in Italy.
Here’s a video of him crashing in 2019, if you’re into that sort of thing.
And here’s a better look at his car, now all fixed up, after Covid slowed the repairs.
Schwaiger is aggressive, sawing at the wheel at points, keeping the 993 just on the edge of grip through the super tight turns. And if you’ve driven an old turbocharged 911, you know that’s harder than it looks. The sound too, with the custom paddle shift gearbox, is amazing. We can all only hope to be this cool entering our eighth decade on the planet.
