An updated 2020 Toyota Tacoma lands in a few days

Just ahead of the Chicago auto show (soon to be renamed the Antarctica auto show), Toyota is giving the world a glimpse at the updated Tacoma truck. The teaser image shared by Toyota doesn't reveal all that much, but it does reveal the fact that the headlights are a little different, featuring a squared-off interior structure compared to the current model. This points to the likelihood that the Tacoma will swap out its current halogen lights for LEDs, which seems like a timely upgrade.

Toyota has also posted a short clip on Facebook, which reveals the addition of a power driver's seat — the current model does not offer one. This points to the possibility that a power seat for the passenger could join the menu as well when the 2020 model goes on sale.

Not much of the interior is visible in the short video clip, but it's a good bet that the 2020 model will feature an updated infotainment system and a few more stylistic tweaks.

The Tacoma is due for a midcycle refresh, so the headlights are likely one of the changes we'll see in Chicago in a few days. But everything else, including other equipment and tech changes, is up in the air for now.

The biggest question is whether Toyota will update the powertrain choices as well. The current model debuted in 2015, offering a choice of a 2.7-liter four-cylinder producing 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, or a 3.5-liter V6 producing 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. These engines are likely to carry over, but we could see a small boost in power just from some tuned engine software.

The current, third-generation model has been holding its own since it debuted in 2015, but with the Ford Ranger now providing some competition in the midsize truck segment, the Tacoma could be in line for some more significant updates to keep it fresh for another few years.

We'll see the Tacoma in the metal next week in Chicago (if the doors to the auto show don't freeze into place).
