We’re little more than a month away from GMC’s big Hummer EV reveal. On Tuesday, October 20th the covers come off the re-birth of the Hummer brand as an all-electric truck. And then, about a year later, GMC says production begins. In the meantime, little tidbits are being revealed.
Recently GMC released a sub-30 second video, seen above, showcasing a new feature called Crab Mode. Engaging it turns all four wheels to the right and shows the EV silently moving diagonally away from an actual crab. While the video shows the maneuver on the beach, it’s touted as a “functionality that is tailor-made for off-roading customers.” Think avoiding sharp rocks jutting out from a muddy hill trail.
Until October 20th we’ll add this little nugget of information to the slowly growing, but still small, pile. Facts like the Hummer EV having up to 1,000 horsepower and, depending on how you do the math, 11,500 lb-ft of torque. And, despite its undoubtedly considerable size and weight, 0-60 mph will take but three seconds. Furthermore, the truck will include four removable roof panels to give a more Jeep-like, open-roof feel, if you want it.
In the Automotive world, 2020 is quickly becoming the year of the truck. We’ve now seen the new Ford Bronco, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, a plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler, and this. And it’s technically still summer. For all we know, an all-plastic truck that runs on cotton candy will debut before the year is over.
If it does, we’ll be sure to cover it.
