The newest addition to the historic Popemobile fleet is a humble Dacia Duster, equipped with a number of modifications to allow it to perform official functions and let the Catholic faithful see Pope Francis more easily.
The notoriously humble Argentinian leader of the Catholic faith is a good fit for the white-on-beige Duster, the cheapest serious 4×4 you can buy brand new. We’ve got to suspect he doesn’t approve of the showy alloy wheels and interior technologies, but the big ol’ fish tank on the roof certainly gives him an excellent platform from which to greet the masses while on the move.
It was presented to His Holiness in Vatican City by the top brass of Groupe Renault Romania and Groupe Renault Italy. Among its modifications are the glass box, a widened sunroof, a 30mm-lower ride height and five slightly altered seats. The work was carried out by Dacia Romania’s equivalent to Aston Martin’s Q division and Bentley’s Mulliner wing; Dacia Special Needs.
Inside there are various hand-holds and stability aids for the elderly pope to hold onto if needed. When he’s done waving, he can relax on a “particularly comfortable” bench seat. It’s not yet known when Pope Francis’ first outing in his new Duster will be, but we find ourselves looking forward to it more than we probably should.
