“Take me home country roads, to the place—whoops, there are construction workers, better slow down,” perhaps lacks the poetry of the original line, but could soon be the song of your Q8.
That’s because the Virginia Department of Transportation has agreed to start testing C-V2X on its roads and Audi is eager to get onboard.
C-V2X is Silicon Valley slang for cellular-vehicle to everything, which is itself nerd slang for your car will get live information about changing road conditions over the 5G network.
As with Audis in a handful of cities across the US, that means that Virginians will be able to get a traffic light countdown to let them know when a red light will turn green (or vice versa).
Additionally, though, cars with C-V2X will know not just when a construction zone is coming up, they’ll know when there are actual construction workers present.
That will start in the fall of 2020, and the hope is to eventually use C-V2X to let drivers know all kinds of information. Live updates about hazards on the road by allowing cars to effectively communicate with each other. Audi claims that the technology could eventually, potentially help prevent more than 6,000 pedestrian fatalities per year.
“We are excited about our participation in this pilot deployment as it highlights the broad societal advantages that technology is now poised to deliver through the full 5.9 GHz V2X spectrum near term with far, far more to come as connected and automated vehicle fleets emerge over the next decade,” said Anupam Malhotra, Director of Connected Vehicle Services for Audi of America.
To achieve this, Audi is partnering with Qualcomm.
