No more teases, no more rumors: The 2020 Toyota Supra is here, and boy do our readers have some opinions. First, let’s get a little housekeeping out of the way.
The new Supra, teased for months (years?) and now here, is basically a badge-engineered BMW Z4. It gets BMW’s fantastic turbocharged inline-six, an eight-speed automatic only and rear-wheel drive with an electronic limited slip differential. Output is rated at 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque, and 60 mph passes in just 4.1 seconds. It goes on sale this summer, and we expect to drive it uncamouflaged for the first time in April.
A question we’re asking (actually, Graham is asking) is: Would there be such strong feelings if we hadn’t been inundated with Supra news for the past 18 months. Let’s go to the tape:
Zack7547 starts us off “Wow — is that ugly, or am I getting old and out of touch? Toyota seems to be trying to "stretch" themselves and take risks — the last company that communicated that strategy released the Aztek into the wild.” But then Steve Maly brings us back, sort of, “One of the few designs, of late, coming out of Toyota design that doesn't make me gag. However the side window and roof treatment very ungainly. Many other better choices for 50K plus.”
It doesn’t get much better from there.
