Bharat NCAP will be applicable to type-approved vehicles of the ‘M1’ category.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved the draft notification to introduce Bharat NCAP. The new car assessment program will be rolled out on April 1, 2023.
According to the official statement, Bharat NCAP will be applicable to type-approved vehicles of the ‘M1’ category. These include passenger vehicles with eight seats and having a gross weight of under 3.5 tonnes.
Under the Bharat NCAP program, vehicles will be evaluated for adult and child occupant protection and safety assist technologies. The vehicles will be awarded ‘Star Ratings’ depending on their performance in crash tests.
The Bharat NCAP standard will be aligned with global crash test protocols factoring in the existing Indian regulations.
