What do you do when you need a new family runabout? V8 M3, of course…
Unless there’s some unforeseen overlap in the fabric of space and time, BMW’s trio of E9x models will forever remain the only M3s to use V8 power. The E90 saloon, E92 coupe and E93 convertible are unique in the M3 family for having the deepest, most menacing soundtracks, and are fondly remembered (despite a few flaws) primarily because of that engine: few have warmed to the F8x’s turbocharged inline six like the old eight.
Now the E90 models look tempting, combining a mighty engine with the usability and performance of something up to date. Those attributes helped PHer Survivalist justify his latest acquisition, a one-owner-from-new Monte Carlo E92, to occupy the role of family steed after the departure of his 130i. Survivalist had been set on a saloon because of the four doors, but fell for the coupe’s form after extensive classifieds browsing. Who can blame him?
The car’s a DCT version, Survivalist adamant that the auto better suits his requirements, which include carrying around two young kids. The ratios are closer than the manual, too, so all-round performance feels better. It has passive damping, but this PHer is one who prefers a single setup rather than “loads of button pushing”. Opinions will vary but it’s true that the E92 is a fine handling machine in all forms.
Interestingly, this Monte Carlo recently received a new stainless-steel exhaust, but it was too vocal for Survivalist. He’s opted for a solution that should retain a similarly purposeful tone, but at a slightly lower volume with less droning. We’ll leave him to explain the details of how that’s been possible, and look forward to seeing what else is to come in this 420hp family runabout!
